One really bright spot is the physics STAAR test.

Abilene ISD STAAR Results Are In By Roger Mares, KTXS News POSTED: 5:28 pm CDT June 12, 2012 UPDATED: 5:44 pm CDT June 12, 2012 ABILENE, Texas -- Abilene ISD has received its STAAR test results and the news is pretty good. Here's a break down of the AISD ninth grade test scores against the state average: Algebra 1: 84 percent passed, state average: 83 percent. Geometry and writing: students met the state averages of 98 and 57 percents, respectively. Reading: 68 percent passed, state average: 67-percent. Biology: 87-Percent passed, state average: 84-percent. This is great news for the district, especially during a transition period from the TAKS to the STAAR exam. Across the state there's been some worry about this test, but at Abilene ISD it seems like everything is pretty stable. The dreaded STAAR test is a challenge met by students in the Abilene ISD. "Abilene High, Cooper and Atems surpassed the state averages," said Cathy Ashby, the district's Director of Curriculum. Of the seven tests: algebra 1, geometry, reading, writing, biology and physics, students at the high schools met or surpassed five of them. But the work isn't done for the district. "Although we passed the state averages in most categories, we want to do much, much better than that and so we'll continue to prepare," Ashby said. And what of the students who didn't pass their tests? "Our high schools have contacted all the students who did not do well and those students have been told about summer school and also about the retesting opportunities that are available in July," she added. Students will be judged on how they do on the test over the course of three years. One really bright spot is the physics STAAR test. Statewide, only 66-percent of students passed that one, in Abilene 85 percent passed.
